Orthodontics is a field of dentistry that focuses on the treatment of a malocclusion, or “bad bite.” With a bad bite, your teeth, lips and jaws do not line up properly. Your teeth may be crooked, your bite may not function correctly, or your jaws may appear unbalanced. Most malocclusions are genetic or inherited, but some problems are acquired or develop over time from harmful habits such as thumb sucking.

Why is Treatment Important?
Crooked or crowded teeth are more difficult to maintain and keep clean. Unfortunately, this could lead to gum disease, tooth decay and even premature tooth loss. A malocclusion can also cause chewing difficulty, improper wear of tooth surfaces, and overall stress on bone and gum tissue. Jaw joint problems, or TMJ, can cause chronic headaches and facial pain. Protruding teeth are more susceptible to accidental chipping or fractures. Cross bites can result in unfavorable growth and uneven tooth wear. Open bites can result in tongue-thrusting habits and even speech impediments.

With proper orthodontic treatment, these problems may be alleviated, often for much less than the costs of the additional dental care required to treat such future problems. Ultimately, orthodontics does more than make a pretty smile—it creates a healthier you.

How Does Treatment Work?
At Mongiovi Orthodontics, we use braces, aligners, corrective appliances, and retainers to treat all types of orthodontic problems. They work by applying gentle, continuous pressure to slowly move the teeth into their correct position. We use the highest quality materials which are “body heat activated” to ensure the best treatment with the least amount of patient discomfort. The new techniques and appliances that we use greatly reduce discomfort levels, decrease the frequency of visits, and shorten treatment time.
